Been awhile since we've featured a straight-up death metal album here on IC. Fuck all that.
Here we have The Mystical Gate of Reincarnation, a 4-song, 1993 release from Montreal's Kataklysm. I'm not much of a fan of Kataklysm's later work -- they seemed to become more and more "conventional" as time progressed -- but in '93 these fuckers could do no wrong. Their blastbeats were faster, their subject matter was more esoteric, their riffs were better, and their vocals were crazier than just about anyone else.
Speaking of the vocals... FUCK. Sometimes these guys just sound like a roomful of crazed apes jacked up on PCP fighting for the same microphone in a padded cell. I love it. Unparalleled brutality, unbelievable compositional skills, and heaping helpings of Lovecraftian imagery all in one little 20-minute disc.
FEED THE HUNGER.
