IMPALED - DEATH AFTER LIFE (2005)

Another (somewhat) recent gem from Oakland's own goregrind heroes, Impaled. Mixing equal parts thrash and death, this one is meant as a concept album, telling the tale of a group of four insane medical students who set out to re-animate the dead. This thinly-veiled self reference unfolds through a series of synth-and-dialogue heavy vignettes between proper songs, giving Impaled's Carcass-worshipping onslaught of anatomically-correct splattercore a bit of breathing room while adding an extra dimension of cornball 80's horror (think Re-Animator or Motel Hell). I've been a fan of these guys for years (especially lead guitarist Jason Kocol's acrobatic shredding style) and this album is a large reason why. Silly, vicious, brutal, tacky, and catchy all at the same time. Their new one, The Last Gasp, ain't bad either.
