CONFESSOR - CONDEMNED (1991)

I posted a couple of old Confessor demos way back in March, which were a precursor to Condemned, their first official full-length. This shit is incredibly innovative for being so old, and conceptually I would group Confessor with bands like Trouble and Voivod as far as pure vision and originality. It is also HEAVY AS FUCK, and if you can handle the histrionic opera vocals it is pure GOLD for repeat listenings. It's cool to hear what else was going on in 1991, besides the death spasms of thrash and the birth pains of death metal. Confessor was lurking at the fringes. All hail Confessor!

Sweet, man. I just talked to Ian about that show today, actually. He mentioned your name and said he's stoked on the show. So am I. Hella booger sugar dude.

One of my favorites, though - amazingly - from their catalogue is their latest, 'Unraveled'.

I haven't heard their new stuff. As with many "underground in the 90's and broke up until recently when people started appreciating our music again and now we're touring (but not for the money)" bands (Carcass, Suffocation, etc...) I've never really been interested. But with your endorsement, I will now have to go check it out...

tight. ian is a rad dude. i also totally love the alibi. we did the arcata theatre last time and hustled some huge gaurntee. then we played a ripping 27 min set and walked off. the crowd wanted more and when they realized they we're getting any, started to boo and holler all pissed off. ahhh, arcata. my fav.

saw these on the gods of grind tour way back - I was on the guesty - and tbh, the singing got my back up - and to think I'm a peter hammill nut too!

May give it a spin - I remember them being fairly heavy. I got the CD with the 4 bands from the tour on - I think Cathedral's tunes were the best thing on it.... just pipping carcass' tools of the trade and entombed - then griff left and they turned a bit shite!

Yeah I have no interest in new Carcass or Suffocation or At the Gates or whomever else reconvened for the cash. Latest Confessor is an interesting departure from the old stuff. I thought I'd hate it when I read descriptions of it (not as mind-twistingly technical rhythmically anymore... what? sounds like alice in chains.... what what?) but it turns out the material is very composed, the lyrics (that I can make out) resonant, no filler at all. Really, highest recommendation.
