JOHN CORIGLIANO - ALTERED STATES SOUNDTRACK (1981)

A menacing, dark, skittering soundtrack to a menacing, dark, skittering film. Ken Russel's ode to sensory deprivation, hallucinogens, and madness blew minds upon its release, and remains a staple in the collections of many a stoner cinephile to this day. But how about that fucking soundtrack?!
Devoid of keyboards, electronic modulation, or any of the other trappings of traditional science fiction fare, John Corigliano's monumental score is a straight up conductor-and-orchestra epic, full of swelling, atonal crescendos and screeching violins. If you dug the Penderecki, Univers Zero, or Exorcist OST posts featured on Illogical Contraption in the past, for fuck's sake hurry up and download this thing already. Fuck.

In addition to being a thoroughly kick-ass mindfuck of a movie, Altered States also gave us .gif files such as the ones shown below to trip out on almost 30 years later. Bravo.

PS - Since everything is running about a day late here at I.C. HQ, Prog Blog Wednesdays will be pushed back to Thursday this week. Deal with it.
