Sweet. Probably the most unforgivingly effective soundtrack ever, and to think that none of these pieces were composed for the film...
Oddly enough, the full four movement "Music for Strings..." is in my iTunes right now.
Oh stop showing off Steven. But seriously, I was just watching The shining AGAIN the other night, and "unforgivingly effective" is absolutely the right term for the score. It is my belief that Penderecki's "tone clusters" are the most important thing to happen to horror movie soundtracks, EVER.
Saw the Melvins/Butthole Surfers show recently and the 'vins covered the song from the opening credits. The Big Business guys shared the stage with them, so there were two drummers. I know it's not very metal to say, but I shed a couple of tears.
I saw the Melvins tour before that one (or maybe two tours ago). Gotta admit, that double-drummer setup is some powerful shit. I didn't cry (pussy), but I had one hell of a bangover the next day.
Oh, whuh? Did I say "shed a couple of tears"? No, no, no. I meant "Shit a couple of beers!" Yeah, uh... the music was so rad, I shit out a couple of beers on the fucktards behind me. What's up with these people who go to shows and just complain about the bands dusring the whole set. Shit on 'em!
That makes much more sense.
This has to be one of the best horror movies ever and Jack Nicholson is one of my favorite actors and this is one hell of a movie.
