SLEEP - VOLUME ONE (1991)
Debut album from legendary stoner-doom-sludge-whatever-the-kids-are-calling-it-these-days metal band, Sleep. Not as defining or dynamic as their follow-up classic "Holy Mountain", "Volume One" is still a Hell of a listen, chock full of that stony, Sleep-y crunchiness we all know and love. Fun fact: This was their only album they recorded as a 4 piece (2nd guitarist Justin Marler left the band to become an Orthodox monk).

SLEEP TERROR - PROBING TRANQUILITY (2006)
Sleep Terror is an instrumental mindfuck. Obviously heavily influenced by the technical death metal brain surgery of bands like Necrophagist and Cryptopsy, their music is dense, fast, and shredding. They also throw quite a few jazz breaks into the mix, a nice palate cleanser when the grind gets a bit too intense. The brains behind Sleep Terror is a dude named Luke Jager, a Sacramento native who relocated to Seattle last year. He sometimes records with a drum machine but occasionally performs and records with live drummers crazy enough to try to play his shit. This is definitely "guitar nerd"-type music, the product of a deranged mind focused on creating the most complicated and brutal metal possible. Highly recommended.
