ENGAGE THRUSTERS!
So last Friday, Sweet Baby Jay finally talked me into seeing J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek movie. I am by no means a Trekkie, and my expectations were low for yet another Hollywood "re-imagining" of an established franchise. I walked into the theater wanting to be disappointed, just so I could be the "I told you so" guy. But guess what?
It kicked ass.
Oh well. Moving on...
Star Trek fan fiction has always been a popular pastime for Trekkies, but a much more "specialized" type of fan fiction has been lurking at its fringes as far back as 1974. "Kirk/Spock Slash Fiction" (also known as "K/S Slash" or "Femslash") is a form of Trekkie fan fiction, especially popular among middle-aged lesbian fans, which depict Spock and Kirk as being homosexual lovers through both stories and artwork. Distributed in self-published fanzines such as Fever, Otherwhere, Otherwhen, and Against All Odds (below - you can purchase original copies of said zines here), Femslash art has stayed alive and well for over 25 years, progressing from pen-and-pencil sketches to ornate, digitally-rendered tributes.
Below, you will find an extremely partial gallery of K/S Slash Art, just a small sampling of the amazing imagery this fringe group has produced.
My personal favorite:
One more Star Trek image, not neccessarily homoerotic but remarkable nonetheless:
There are several other Femslash pairings out there as well, such as Batman/Robin (above), Legolas/Gandalf, and even Jack Sparrow/whatever Orlando Bloom's character in Pirates of the Caribbean's name was. For the sake of brevity, I will not include any of these images. You guys can go find them yourselves.
