A monumental release from that magical Black Metal year, 1994. Amidst burning churches, murders, and suicides, Ihsahn, Samoth, Tchort, and Faust produced this epic recording, a raw, unpolished chunk of hatred and beauty. Necrolord (Kristian Wåhlin of Grotesque and Diabolique) supplied that sweet cover art, a classic of the genre.
I'm actually a bigger fan of Emperor's later stuff, but there's something subtle and enchanting about this record, a dark undercurrent that puts it in a class all by itself. This was Emperor's first full-length release. They were, like, ten years old at the time. Approximately.

Seriously, the one album that I don't think I could live without.
The reverb kinda kills it for me. Anthems is nearly perfect in every way, for me.
