This one was requested by an anonymous reader in the comments section of Saturday's Sadistic Intent post, and I can't thank him (or her) enough. Gods of Creation is a straight-up OSDM pummeling, a knuckle-dragging, mind-fucking hate orgy that predates the popularity of similar stuff like Vasaeleth and Dead Congregation by almost a decade. And while we're talking chicken-and-egg, I guess I should also point out that their Egypt fixation goes back almost as far as Nile's as well (Coffin Texts formed in 1994, Nile in '93).
Like their Los Angeles brethren Sadistic Intent, Coffin Texts seem to have a similar aversion to full-length albums, releasing just this one 8-song gem through the course of their 16+ years. A demo followed in '03, but Coffin Texts have managed to stay pretty far from the proverbial "death metal limelight" thus far. It's a shame, because this is killer shit. Sure, the album closes out with back-to-back Slayer and Black Sabbath covers ("Crypts of Eternity" and "Disturbing The Priest" respectively), which is basically the metal equivalent of doing Beatles songs. But it's forgivable, I guess. These guys shred, even though their album bears resemblance to Graveyard Classics III...
NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT.

I'm the anonymous poster who requested the Coffin Texts, and yep, I'm a "her". Thank you so much for this. Will be good to hear them again after so many years. When I saw 'em live, the singer/guitar player's hair was about down to the backs of his *knees*. Amazing. Even more amazing, the Century Media goons were standing around stroking themselves that night, and neither SI nor CT were impressed by them a whit. Made me love both bands even more.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I knew about Coffin Texts before this revelatory post is a cover they did on this amazing Morbid Angel cover album I have. My corpse is frothing over with joy. Thanks, Anonymous and free viagra for everyone!!!

ReplyDeleteSaw these guys in a basement in Springfield, Missouri with Incantation. It was awesome and so very loud. They kept talking about "the heads in Incan" all night long and how cool it was to hang with them.
