HEAVY METAL MANIA 7" (1980)

I’ve been feeling short on time lately. Not like, near death, where has my life gone, short on time (like old man Cobras). Just too busy with nonsense to really get into some rad shit. The rad times to nonsense ratio is FUCKED right now. It’s a drag. ANYWAY, when you’re short on time, demos, EP’s and 7”s are the perfect solution to a busy lifestyle. Only going to be home for 8 minutes? That’s alright, you can still take in a complete piece of art, without that, “man have I ever even gotten to track 9 on this record” feeling. Check your PLAYS column in your iTunes (if you roll that way). It’s seriously crazy how many albums you’ve never finished off. You might even find some of your favorites have unexplored tracks way down at the bottom. I guess we’re all a little ADD these days. ANYFUCKINGWAY, it’s going to be EP’s, demos, and 7”s from me for a bit. I hope you dig’em.

HERE

HOLOCAUST. Most defiantly one of the absolute best NWOBHM bands of all time. “But Sean, these dudes are from Scotland?” Which is true. But, due to the relatively small size of the NWOSHM movement, these guys qualify. HEAVY METAL MANIA is the single off their best record, NIGHTCOMERS (which you already own). However it’s totally worth downloading this top notch EP because the versions are totally different and owning both the single and the record is more than necessary for even the most casual NWOBHM fan. If you don’t own NIGHTCOMERS, you can correct that below. It’s easily one of the top 5 NWOBHM albums of all time, a long with anything by Witchfinder General. Which brings me to this question:

What are YOUR top 5 NWOBHM albums of all time? Let me know, I’m totally curious. Well, what are your other 4 besides NIGHTCOMERS.

  1. NWOBHM is kind of a nebulous term.

I like Virtue - We Stand to Fight (and the '86 demo too)

Tyrant - Hold Back the Lightning

    Diamond Head, of course

Satan - Court In the Act

    Savage - Loose N' Lethal

    and sure, Holocaust.

    Blitzkrieg too.

    Tygers of Pan Tang, perhaps.

More are coming to me but let's stick with those.

  6. stonerphonic....

thank you for including a stoner rock band from the mid 90's, a doom band from the early 90's, a space psyche band from the early 70's, a proto metal band from the late 60's, and an early metal band from the mid 70's. and iron maiden (the only actual NWOBHM band, ranked 6th on a list of TOP 5 ALBUMS).

that was probably the most punk rock comment I have ever seen.

  8. Has anyone seen the cool NWOBHM documentary? My favorite is Praying Mantis

  10. Being of Welsh blood (despite the name), I was quite excited to discover Budgie (the li'l sheepshaggers that could) shockingly late in life. My only racial heroes up until then had been Lemmy and Tom Jones.

Still, I've got a soft spot for Pagan Altar, personally.

  11. it's called iron maiden and the NWOBHM it's on netflix. They interview lots of bands it's worth checking out!

  12. Does "Killers" count? One of the most appropriately titled albums ever...
Aesop posted a record by Legend some time ago. It rocks.
That Tygers album right before John Sykes jumped ship is great.
And I never get tired of Saxon (up to "Crusader"). Guilty pleasure.

Oh, and you can mock me all you want, I don't care, and sure they weren't British (or even English speakers at all), but Loudness' 4th album "Disillusion" [1984] is fantastic.

  13. Yeah Saxon is one of my all time guilty pleasures. Just doesn't get better than denim and leather! Thanks, crankenstein, I'm gonna check that doc out.

  15. To make my list a bit more interesting I am excluding some obvious choices like Iron Maiden, Saxon and Venom. If you're wondering what the hell does Venom and Iron Maiden have in common I'll point out that NWOBHM for me is simply Heavy Metal released in Great Britain roughly circa 1978-1984.

Top 5 albums in alphabetical order:

Chateaux - Chained And Desperate Just listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDIF3mhiwc4
if there ever was a "nwobhm-sound" this is it. Simple, honest and full of fucking spirit and passion. GOING STRAIGHT TO THE HEART!)

    Cloven Hoof - Cloven Hoof

    Holocaust - The Nightcomers

Saracen - Heroes, Saints and Fools

    Witchfinder General - Death Penalty

    ...wait there must be 6!

    Angel Witch - Angel Witch

Top 5 demos, EPs, live etc.:

Arc - War Of The Ring 7"
The original Lord of the Rings-metal!

    Hell - Demo '82
Weird, insane, obscure and highly idiosyncratic.

    Pagan Altar - Pagan Altar
This was a self-released casette which I am counting as demo. The band released this in late 90s as an album and with new title "Volume 1".

Tygers Of Pan Tang - BBC Live in Concert
This was recorded in 1981 so The Tygers play their early stuff here and man they smoke. They are both wild and super tight and Jess Cox sounds perhaps even better live than in studio. Tygers of Pan Tang were one of the first bands I came across when I first started to look past Maiden, Saxon and Venom deeper into NWOBHM thus their hits like Gangland, Hellbound, Slave To Freedom and Tyger Bay have become the defining nwobhm songs for me. Especially Gangland is among the first things that come into my mind when someone says "NWOBHM".

Marquis de Sade - Demo '81

    Bubbling under:

Virtue (though their first release came out pretty late for nwobhm of my definition), Ritual, Geddes Axe, Jaguar, Tokyo Blade, Grim Reaper, Charger, Desolation Angels..

  19. Yo Manslaughter, I just ordered Iron Maiden & The New Wave of British Heavy Metal on Netflix. Should be here in a couple days. You bring the drugs, I'll bring the riffs.

Speaking of riffs, I want to change my answer: Wings isn't actually my favorite NWOBHM band, Manowar is. HAIL TO ENGLAND!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. HAIL! HAIL! HAIL! Dude, I can't wait. Womanowar and Maiden. I'm coming over today. With sausage.
