Third album from Düsseldorf, Germany's own technothrash magicians Deathrow. Deception Ignored was arguably their finest hour, surpassing the musical weirdness of 1986's Satan's Gift and 1987's Raging Steel by leaps and bounds, finding the band at their creative zenith before the inevitable disappointment of 1992's Life Beyond. Forget the album cover. Forget the shitty logo. Forget the somewhat middle-of-the-road, standard-issue thrash vocals. This album is a cornucopia of totally next-level compositional ideas, placing Deathrow firmly alongside like-minded acts like Voivod and Coroner in the canon of pioneering extreme/technical/progressive metal acts of the 1980's.
Not for the squeamish or the stupid. Prepare to be chuffed!

Mate, I'm ALREADY chuffed that you posted this masterpiece. I thought it woulda been Helm who posted this, but I'm glad the BM is leaving your veins and the techno-thrash is seeping back in.
ReplyDeleteCredit where it's due, I believe Helm was the one who intially turned me on to Deathrow...
ReplyDeleteThis is a good record. I endorse the endorsement. Wonderful, false, gay technothrash.
ReplyDeleteFucking love this album but some people still roll their eyes when I mention that this is my favourite Deathrow record. It seems most people are more keen to the band's earlier efforts. I remember when I first came to know the band and everyone told me to avoid this album. Man, they were dead wrong about it!
ReplyDeleteAnd I actually like the cover art even if it reminds me of 70s prog/hardrock album covers a bit (or perhaps because of that!). Vocals also rule but not in god-damn-this-singer-sounds-fierce way. Don't get me wrong he sounds very passionate to me but also very human. Fragile, disappointed, anxious.. They go well with the music and transcends the lyrics.
ReplyDeleteThis almost sounds like a more technical Anthrax (Anthrax + Coroner possibly??) Either way, this reminds me of another similar band from Germany: Grinder (http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Grinder/939). I, too, endorse this album!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I definitely get an Anthrax vibe from Deathrow. Coroner + Anthrax just about nails it.
ReplyDeleteI love this album, it's fantastic.
ReplyDeleteWhat I find impressive about this band is that they generally seem to be very focused, in that they know exactly what they're doing with their riffs and song progressions, so that you'll rarely find them doing something just for the sake of complexity. This also means that they're quite capable of developing things over a whole song or period of time, rather than just writing riffs in isolation which may sound good when one moves into the other but aren't really connected beyond that.
ReplyDeleteThey are also, of course, very solid technothrash, and I like technothrash. If one can write some competent twisting riffs and sing about nuclear apocalypse or something, I'll probably like it. In fact, these guys are so unapologetically technothrash that they even have a song named 'Machinery'.
