Sunday's Monsters

As the fall descends upon the northern hemisphere and I face another 6 month lengthy cycle of increasing darkness and rain I rely on classic films to brighten my imagination in the darkness. That being said, I look to the masters of animation from a pre-CGI era to accompany me on cinematic adventures through space, time, and beyond. I vacillate between the brothers Quay and Ray Harryhausen when I want to go back to a time of less complicated animation…Ray, as many of you may know is responsible for bringing us some of the best stop motion films ever, The Clash of the Titans and Jason and the Argonauts.

J&TA Skelton fight scene…hell yeah. The way they pop up from the ground is so cool. If I was Medea though, I’d totally fight them off too instead of running off to the ship like a total she-wimp. where the hell is Xena when you need her?

Ray is still busy making cool stuff at the sweet age of 90. Respect.

Back to homework land…Sigh.

  1. Yeah, i guess Harryhausen is OK or whatever but there was a super-obscure remake of Clash of the Titans that came out last year with WAYYY better CGI and a WAAAYYYYY cooler Kraken AND the guy from Avatar too. And Liam Neeson. Fuck it was amazing.

  2. Cobras, if I thought you weren't joking I'd get on a plane and punch you in the throat.

Camellia, have you ever seen any of jan Svankmajer's work? If you dig the Quay Brothers, I think you'd be really into it. He did amazingly creepy stop-motion versions of Alice In Wonderland and Faust, amongst others. Check out his website here.

  3. The original Clash Of The Titans effing rules! Wasn't there some female nudity in that and still rated PG?

  4. Jan Svankmajer is so out there. little Otik ! Little Otik!

I've never seen Faust though...thanks for the heads up TTTSNB!

Cobras: whatever the hell your smoking over there..stop. It is truly affecting your ability to maintain focus and reason...in a bad way. In fact, It may require testing to make sure its not permanent. Look for at home testing supplies in your mailbox shortly...

    Sincerely,
    A concerned nursing student.

  5. The Ymir from 20 Million Miles to Earth is cool. Jason, Clash and all of the Sinbad flicks too. I saw this year's Clash in 2D and really enjoyed it. Dug the monsters and felt it a worthy successor. Sorry.
