In keeping with today's "monster" theme:
You know what?
Fuck the modern "vampire craze". The Great Werewolf Movement of 1981 could kick the ever-loving shit out of all that Team Edward emo bullshit in about zero seconds. Example: Not only did 1981 give us An American Werewolf In London, but it was also the year that Joe Dante's The Howling was released, one of the finest odes to lycanthropic bloodlust created to date. Pure ass-kickery. Gore, blood, painful transformation, and howling at the moon. A simple equation:
WEREWOLVES > VAMPIRES
It's that simple.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that a slick Italian Bro in coke shades and a gaudy pink collared shirt put the score together for this one. Not one bit.
Pino Donaggio is Pimp Sauce personified, a high-ranking spaghetti-cinema composer on par with Fabio Frizzi, Riz Ortolani, or Claudio Simonetti. If anything, Dinaggio went way more mainstream than any of the aforementioned, scoring such big-budget flicks as Carrie, Dressed To Kill, Body Double, and Raising Cain. But don't hold that against him.
The Howling OST is a solid gold horror composition, a full-on, sweeping orchestral piece, heavy on the violins (Donaggio has been playing since age 10), flecked with quick analog keyboard passages throughout. If you're the type of person that appreciates a good fright-flick soundtrack, this needs to be in your collection.
