Two mad doctors, both of them late 90's alter-egos of Dr. Kool Keith, formerly of the seminal Ultramagnetic MC's.
On Dr. Octagon: A perfect synthesis of street smarts and extraterrestrial/metaphysical space knowledge, recited with surgical precision by a serial killer/mental patient/quantum physicist. The scientific meanderings balance equally with the porn samples and multidimensional psychobabble, leading the casual listener to assume that perOH SHIT THERE'S A HORSE IN THE HOSPITAL!!!
On Dr. Dooom: Initially I was disappointed with this album upon its release, finding it far inferior to the ridiculously complex Octagonecologyst. But the relentless shit-talking and Dirty South-meet-RZA beats have grown on me over the years, and these days the two albums receive equal playtime. Dr. Dooom is some hilarious shit, and surprisingly, the rhymes prove almost as strange and detailed as Doc Oc upon repeat listening.
You can run, but you can't hide. It's inevitable. Dr. Dooom will find you, dressed up like Dracula eating a slice of pizza on your stoop.

Brain damage on the mike of the highest order. Perhaps the strangest hip-hop I have ever heard. I can't decide whether I like the out-of-genre Pushead cover or the photo collage on First Served better. Not a Dr. title, but Black Elvis is a great one as well. Kool Keith is a true original.
ReplyDeleteShit is densely unhinged. More than 10 years later and I still catch little things on each listen that I'd missed before. I can totally forgive his occasional crap records cuz the dude really is doing his own thing.
ReplyDeleteI can also recommend "Masters of Illusion", which is billed as a Kutmaster Kurt release.
I missed the boat on Black Elvis, got it when it first came out but never gave it the second chance I did Dr. Dooom. Maybe I need to go check it out again.
