THORR'S HAMMER - DOMMEDAGSNATT (1995)

My post last week about the "Women In Extreme Music" (DOWNLOAD IT!!!) compilation reminded me about this crushingly heavy, short-lived band. Thorr's Hammer was the pre-Burning Witch project of Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson (also both members of Sunn 0))). Only active for about six months, they played 2 shows and this 4-song EP was their only release. This band's major selling point was their vocalist, Norweigan exchange student Runhild Gammelsaeter, who, at only 17 years old, belted out some gutteral doom vocals that could curl your toenails. Heavy, simple, and brutal, like an angry Apatosaurus seeking revenge, this sludgy beast will simultaneously melt your face and send shivers up your spine. I garauntee you will be CHUFFED!

Where's Runhild now, you ask? Well, it turns out that upon her return to Norway, she got her Ph.D in cell physiology and now works as Manager and Chief Scientific Officer at an Oslo company called Regenics (a "Pioneer in the Development of Autologous Cell-Based Therapeutics", according to their website). Don't believe me? Check it out.

  7. Norwegian women do not age well at all. She went from Christina Applegate to Glen Close in 14 years? Dayuuum! Sick vocals nonetheless.

  10. Why on Earth didn't she kept her career as a Metal Singer? She could have done terrific... And might rival some of the best there are out here now... and by the way.. she was hot... But Glen Close is a tough one.
