SATURDAY MORNING DOUBLE FEATURE: PHANTASM

PHANTASM - WRECKAGE (1987)

Phantasm was the post-Hirax band mainman Katon W. DePena put together. On drums was the legendary Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Dethklok, Strapping Young Lad, Old Man's Child, Tetament, etc. etc. ETC.) and on bass was Metallica's original dude Ron McGovney. They only managed to put out one six-song demo, which is here along with a nine-song live set from Phoenix, Arizona recorded when they toured with Nuclear Assault in '87. The sound is similar to Hirax's, rippin' speed/thrash metal along the lines of early Slayer and Exodus. Too bad this was all they ever released, as the tunes are heavy as Hell and show lots of promise. Post-Phantasm, Katon got Hirax back together, and they're still gigging to this day. Sweet fucking jams.

FRED MYROW & MALCOLM SEAGRAVE - PHANTASM SOUNDTRACK (1979)

Phantasm (the movie) is one of my all-time favorites. Creepy, multidemensional dwarves, flying chrome balls with knives and shit in them that track you down and kill you, awful, late 70's acting, and, above all, a GREAT fucking soundtrack. I don't know much about Fred Myrow or Malcolm Seagrave, but they put together an awesome score here. Lots of analog synth and weird, high-pitched buzzing noises, paired up with some sweet, laid-back 70s funk gooves and that great recurring 8-note signature riff. I am a huge fan of horror movies in general and especially horror movie soundtracks. This is one of the best, something to play on the front porch on Halloween to scare the crap out of the neighbor kids.
